Unfortunately, a snake hidden in a sailor’s basket of figs eventually bit her, and the tower was named after the maiden who lost her life there.

Throughout the years, Kız Kulesi has functioned as a lighthouse, quarantine center, customs checkpoint, and watchtower to safeguard Istanbul against naval attacks. The tower has undergone numerous destructions and rebuilds throughout history, with the current structure dating back to the 18th century.
